Originally established in 1968 as the “Pilgrim Rest Volunteer Fire Department”, what eventually grew to be West Pulaski Fire District #23″ began in modest ways. Most rural volunteer fire departments, like ours, are simply neighbors helping neighbors.  Without a formal city ‘incorporation’ or tax base to fund the department, much of the equipment and facilities are pulled together with dues and donations. We have come a long way as our community as grown. Now the largest volunteer fire district in the state, we serve 9,000 + residents in an area that is 160 square miles in size. Lets take a look back to see how we began.
